Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.”
Reflection
Advent is the season of anticipation. It is a time to prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christ, who brings hope, love, joy, and peace. The prophecy in Micah 5:2 echoes this sentiment, pointing to Bethlehem as the birthplace of the promised ruler over Israel. This humble town may have been small and insignificant in the eyes of the world, but it held great significance in God's plan for salvation.
As we reflect on this prophecy, we are reminded that God often works through unexpected people and places to fulfill His promises. Just like Bethlehem, we may feel small or overlooked in the grand scheme of things, but God sees us and has a purpose for our lives. This passage also highlights Jesus' humanity, as it speaks of His origins from ancient times. It points to the mystery and wonder of the incarnation—the divine becoming human.
Action
As you go about your day, pay attention to the seemingly small or insignificant moments. Look for ways that God may be working in unexpected ways or through unlikely people. Offer a kind word or act of service to someone who may feel overlooked or undervalued. Remember that God sees all and is present in every moment, no matter how small. Allow yourself to marvel at the wonder of Christ's incarnation and give thanks for His humble beginnings in Bethlehem.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the humble beginnings of Your Son, Jesus, in Bethlehem. In a world that often values grandeur and status, You chose simplicity and humility to bring forth the Savior of all. As we prepare for Grace in Action Sunday, help us to see value in the small and ordinary parts of our lives, acknowledging Your presence and purpose in each one. Guide us to be instruments of Your love, mindful of those who might feel unnoticed, and filled with gratitude for the miracle of Christ's incarnation. Prepare our hearts and hands for service, that we may reflect Your grace in all we do. Amen.
