Advent: Grace in Action - Day 3

Isaiah 11:1-5

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;

   from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—

   the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,

   the Spirit of counsel and of might,

   the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—

and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,

   or decide by what he hears with his ears;

but with righteousness he will judge the needy,

with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.

Reflection

What a vision of hope and renewal we behold! Just as a tender shoot emerges from a seemingly barren stump, so too does the promise of a new and righteous leader arise from the lineage of David. This leader, filled with the Spirit of the Lord, embodies wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, and a profound reverence for God. Unlike earthly rulers, often swayed by the fickle winds of public opinion, this leader will dispense justice and righteousness, putting the needs of the poor and vulnerable above all else.

We know of this leader  as Jesus, the promised Messiah. His life on earth exemplified these characteristics and continues to be our source of hope and inspiration today.  This prophecy reminds us to seek His guidance and example in our own lives, especially during this season of waiting and preparation.

Action

Take a moment to reflect on the attributes listed in this passage: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, reverence for God. Choose one or two that stood out to you and meditate on how Jesus embodied these qualities in His life. Consider ways that you can incorporate these traits into your own actions and attitudes towards others. Thank God for the Spirit that rests upon us as believers and ask for guidance in cultivating these characteristics in your life.

Prayer

Gracious Father, we are in awe of the wisdom and understanding that You impart through Your Spirit. As we meditate on the attributes of Jesus highlighted in Isaiah, we seek to emulate His example in our daily interactions. Grant us the patience and strength to live out His values, showing kindness and justice to those around us. Guide our decisions and actions with knowledge and reverence for You.  As we prepare for the upcoming Grace in Action Sunday, may this event inspire us to serve others and reflect Your love in meaningful ways. During this Advent season, may our lives radiate the light of Christ and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
