Matthew 1:18-25
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Reflection
This passage highlights Joseph's love for Mary, even in the midst of uncertainty and misunderstanding. Despite being initially hesitant due to societal expectations at that time, Joseph decided to follow God's plan and marry Mary, showing deep trust and faith in God's will. This demonstrates the power of love to overcome obstacles and bring about reconciliation. It also serves as a reminder that God's plans may not always align with our own, but ultimately they are for our good.
Action
Reflect on a time when you were faced with an unexpected situation or decision, and how you responded to it. Consider whether your actions aligned with God's will or your own desires. Ask for His guidance in discerning His plans for your life, even if they may be different from what you originally envisioned.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Joseph, whose love and trust in You guided him through challenging circumstances. Help us to emulate his courage and faith when faced with uncertainties in our lives. Help us put grace in action. Open our hearts to Your will, so that we may walk faithfully on the path You have set before us. Grant us the strength to trust in Your plans, even when they differ from our own. As we journey through this Advent season, teach us to love as Joseph did, with humility and obedience to Your divine guidance. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
